چکیده

Comparable results are obtained when serum calcium is measured by a colorimetric cresolpthalein method on the Technicon SMA 12/60 and by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (Instrumentation Laboratory Model 153 instrument), with strontium as an internal standard. Sera from 250 patients with abnormal calcium concentrations, ranging from 4.9 mg/lOU ml to 9.0 mg/100 ml, were measured by each method; the difference between the means for each method was only 0.04 mg/lOG ml. The standard deviation of the difference between paired results was ±0.16 mg/lOG ml. We were unable to discover any effect of drug or disease on the colorimetric assay, which therefore is suitable for use in large-scale surveys. On the other hand, the more precise atomic absorption spectrophotometry is suitable for use as a reference method. In addition, with an internal standard it is fast and simple, making it suitable for emergency assays of calcium 24 h a day.

Interference by hemolysis with various methods for total calcium and its correction by trichloroacetic acid precipitation.

We evaluated the influence of hemolysis on total serum calcium as determined with the Du Pont aca, SMA 12/60, Ektachem 400, Corning 940 EGTA titrator, and the Beckman Astra 8, comparing results with those obtained by atomic absorption spectroscopy. We find that hemoglobin does not influence calcium measurements with the SMA 12/60, Ektachem 400, or Beckman Astra 8. The presence of hemoglobin exc...

Comparison of atomic absorption spectrophotometry and fluorometry for the measurement of serum calcium.

An atomic absorption spectrophotometric (AAS) and a fluorometric method for the measurement of serum calcium were found to be corn-parablein acceptable reproducibility. The recovery figures obtained by the fluorornetric procedure were considerably lower than those given by AAS in the 2-4 mEq./L. range, although recoveriesat higher levels (6 mEq./L.) were acceptable. The average recovery for the...

Application of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry in the Determination of Calcium in Serum.

Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) was applied to the determination of serum calcium. A special diluent was developed to abolish the effect of absorption depressors. This made possible measurement of calcium in directly diluted serum samples without prior removal of any serum constituents. Values obtained by AAS on calcium oxalate precipitates from serum were identical with those found b...

New rapid kit for determining calcium in serum and urine evaluated.

We describe the performance of a colorimetric reagent kit (Diagnostic Systems Laboratories, Inc., Webster, TX 77598) for measuring calcium directly in urine, serum, and ultrafiltered serum, and compare the results with those obtained with atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The CV for within-run precision was 2.8 and 2.1% for urine and whole serum, respectively (n = 10 each). Between-run preci...

Determination of calcium and magnesium in serum, urine, diet, and stool by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

ATOMIC ABSORPTION was developed by Walsh and his associates (1) as an analytical technic applicable to the determination of many metals. Willis (2-4) found that this technic was applicable in particular to tile determination of calcium and magnesium in Serum and urine. These published results indicated that atomic absorption spectrophotometry would be a simple, rapid, and practical method for t...
